While living our dream on a working farm in southeastern Ohio...

Thank you for visiting us! We are a family of makers and visionaries, creating handcrafted products to last and be cherished by you and your loved ones for generations. We live, work, and play together on a 92 acre farm in the hills of southeastern Ohio.  This is our home, as well as the inspiration for all you'll find here in our farm store.

Haulin' Hoof Farm began with a dream of self-sufficiency and simple living -  the pairing of two minds with very similar goals.  We purchased our farm, with baby in belly and one at hand, in 2006. An old family farm still inhabited by one of its descendants was switching hands, and names, for the first time in over a century.  Feeling nervous and honored, we acquired the farm. There was a home built in 1890 which had been added on to, and several ramshackled outbuildings. We had a lot of work ahead of us, but our ambitious nature kept us focused . Over several years of hard work, along with many accomplishments and failures, we've created a humble business of turning the seeds of our labor into something we can share with others. Our intention is to create goods that will last and be appreciated by the acquirer, and be passed down through the hands of those who've kept and cared for them.

Each member of our family, right on down the line, plays a role in our business. Chris, husband and father of our children, oversees woodshop production. He's always had a love for nature and a knack for making things with his hands. He's a woodman - the harvester and procurer of all things wood.  He has an eye for detail and design, piecing wood together in functional and artistic ways.  As well as creating many of the wonderful items you'll find in our shop, he's been building custom homes and structures for nearly 20 years from local, natural materials. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Ohio University in Environmental Biology and a Masters in Industrial Engineering from Cleveland State University. Fusing his love of nature and educational background, he constructs timeless and beautiful products from timber frame homes to many of the items you'll find here in our shop.  To learn more about Chris and his building techniques, visit www.foxnaturalbuilding.com.

I, Valerie, am wife and mother of our three children.  I, too, have always felt a deep connection with nature and love working with, and growing, natural materials - to create items that have soul. I've always loved surrounding myself with handmade items, new and old - honestly and lovingly made items that were created by people who found pleasure in their making. I spent my first two years of college studying Natural Resources and Wildlife at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.  I then moved to New England and completed a Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the University of Maine.  Now I find great pleasure in crafting and seeking new ways to incorporate our own farm-raised materials, be it plant or animal, into unique and sustainable products to share with others.

Our children, Adallie, Elsie, and Oscar, have learned the importance of sustainability and all things natural and handmade. They love to contribute with putting their skills to work.  Adallie, our eldest, fancies ceramics.  At the young age of twelve she purchased an old wooden kick wheel with her savings. Now a teenager, she's creating ceramic pieces from simple adornments to bowls and mugs. Some of her work can be found here. Elsie, our middle child, is most involved with caring for the farm animals. She's an up-and-out-the-door kind of girl, always making sure everyone with hooves and paws is fed and watered. She also takes part in many of the day-to-day operations of our store.  Oscar is seven.  He may be small, but he does a really great job of lending a helping hand wherever it's needed.  He's pretty good at moving those big square bales of hay and keeping the woodshop tidy.  We invite you to browse our shop and do hope you'll find something that puts a smile on your face!

Warmly, Valerie Fox
