Experience the joy of weaving with a shuttle that's like a fine piece of furniture. Each of our shuttles is hand sanded to 800 grit, giving them a feel as smooth as silk. As weavers ourselves, we make sure there are no wood fibers to snag the finest of yarns.
They are beautiful and sturdy, measuring approximately 3/16" thick by 1.5" wide.
Made here on our farm, each has its own unique grain and color characteristics. We use only petroleum-free, natural oil finish.
Stick shuttles come in handy when weaving on a rigid heddle loom where the sinking shed doesn't easily allow for a boat shuttle to glide over it. Wrap your weft around each side in a figure-eight to maximize their holding capacity.
About the wood used to make our shuttles:
The wood used to make this product was harvested either on our family farm or a private woodlot within a 50 mile radius. We primarily harvest trees during the winter, when the ground is frozen and there is lesser chance of damage to the forest floor. This, too, is the time all our little critter friends are hidden away in their winters haven.
Trees are selectively cut using the “worst-first” method, and gently drug out with the help of a logging cart and our team of Suffolk draft horses. Logs are then taken to the farm’s sawmill, milled into lumber, and put into a solar kiln to dry.
Once the lumber has reached the proper moisture content it is turned into beautiful, functional products for all to enjoy! We intentionally select out lumber with beautiful character in the grain, so each piece has a unique appeal.
